Any battery running at an elevated temperature will exhibit loss of capacity faster than at room temperature. That's why, as with extremely cold temperatures, chargers for lithium batteries cut off in the range of 115° F. In terms of discharge, lithium batteries perform well in elevated temperatures but at the cost of reduced longevity.
"Benefitting from the ethyl acetate-based electrolyte and organic polymers electrodes, the rechargeable battery can work well at the ultra-low temperature of -70 degrees Celsius," Xia says. Xia and his team believe this may be a more elegant solution than alternative attempts to boost lithium-ion battery function in extreme temperatures.
After high temperature aging, potential adverse phenomena of batteries will be exposed, such as voltage change, thickness change and internal resistance change, which directly test the safety and electrochemical performance of these batteries. Temperature has a great influence on the cycle aging rate of lithium batteries.
While batteries can operate in relatively cold climates, they have their limits. Most perform at only 50% of their optimal level when the temperature hits -20 degrees Celsius, and by -40 degrees Celsius, lithium-ion batteries only have about 12% of their room temperature capacity.
That's why, as with extremely cold temperatures, chargers for lithium batteries cut off in the range of 115° F. In terms of discharge, lithium batteries perform well in elevated temperatures but at the cost of reduced longevity. “It's foolish to assume battery performance and longevity aren't impacted by temperature,” summarized Cromer.
