Tip1: If a capacitor has long enough leads exposed on the front side of the board, you can cut the capacitor off leaving the old leads and solder the new capacitor to the old leads. This method is even faster. See the last picture for an example. Tip 2: You should replace all the electrolytic capacitors, not just the visibly bad ones.
Hold the component in place and solder the corner leads to secure it in place. Alternatively, you can secure the component to the board using polyimide tape and then solder the corner leads. Congratulations on completing this introductory soldering guide!
(If you have something like this for other components, it is also welcome) Edit: The purpose is hand soldering, so smallest size is 0603, but it is rather for a sizing guide in the other direction, max value/voltage combination for a certain size.
For larger capacitors use thicker wire (lower gauge) or put multiple cat 5 strands in parallel to each lead. Find and mark all the capacitor leads on the back side of the circuit with + and -. Make jumpers that will go from the back side of the board to the front of the board where the new capacitor will be placed.
While many repairs can be accomplished without soldering, there are times when it's necessary to replace certain components, e.g., joysticks, headphone batteries, and rumble motors. Additionally, soldering opens up a new world of fun electronics projects. It may sound intimidating, but it's easy to get started!
