Outlook of energy storage system in Malaysia Energy storage is one of the emerging technologies which can store energy and deliver it upon meeting the energy demand of the load system.
Currently in Peninsular Malaysia there are 27 coal and gas power plants are in operation with a total installed capacity of 1440 MW, compared to renewables 327 MW (IRENA, 2022). This shows a clear dominance of fossil energy and for the country to completely phaseout the fossil fuel power generation by 2050 is too ambitious.
Overview of the progress and outlook of energy storage adoption on both new and second life energy storage in Malaysia. Potential benefits of energy storage in terms of economic cost or reliability within the Malaysian distribution network. Barriers and challenges on the deployment of energy storages within the Malaysian grid system.
The technology for power plant CCS has been proven in operation i.e., Petra Nova and Boundary Dam CCS. There is no local expertise/experience to build and operate CCS system in Malaysia. Advancement of CCS technology through R&D activities can lead to optimization of the performance as well as cost, improving CCS economics viability.
To supplement the evaluation of power plant CCS feasibility in Malaysia, qualitative analysis is conducted to identify the barriers and enablers of CCS implementation. Combination of two tools is used in this analysis i.e., the SWOT and PESTEL method.
