However, a new trend in the country's exports has emerged in the past two years – a sharp increase in electrical and electronics (E&E) manufacturing products, particularly solar panels.
After a short-lived boom in 2022-2023, Cambodia's solar panel exports entered a critical juncture in 2024, facing significant challenges.
The project was closed on 31 August 2018. 129. Under the Cambodia Solar Power Project, ADB's PSOD provided a $9.55 million debt package to finance the development of the country's first 10 MW solar power plant in Bavet, Svay Rieng Province.
However, considering the country's historical energy mix, the existing solar capacity appears positive. As of 2011, Cambodia had no solar power plants, and solar energy was not a part of the country's energy mix. Cambodia's current installed solar capacity is slightly over 400 MW, but the country is targeting 3.1 GW by 2040.
Despite facing significant challenges, Cambodia possesses several advantages that would support the continued development of its solar panel industry. Cambodia can diversify its export destinations from the U.S. to developing economies, such as those in the Middle East or Africa who are transiting to greater use of renewable energy.
