The AC Disconnect is used to separate the inverter from the electrical grid. In a solar PV system the AC Disconnect is usually mounted to the wall between the inverter and utility meter. The AC disconnect may be a breaker on a service panel or it may be a stand-alone switch.
Basically, solar disconnects are simply “off” switches for solar systems. Most building codes in the United States require that AC and DC disconnects are installed alongside solar systems.
The PV disconnect allows the DC current between the modules (source) to be interrupted before reaching the inverter. The second disconnect is the AC Disconnect. The AC Disconnect is used to separate the inverter from the electrical grid. In a solar PV system the AC Disconnect is usually mounted to the wall between the inverter and utility meter.
If you have an inverter, it is likely that there are circuit breakers inside of the box. Be sure to open up the box and turn off those circuit breakers as well. Once you have turned off all the possible circuit breakers and switches associated with the solar system you can move on to the next of disconnecting your panels.
