Amnesty International and Afrewatch are calling on multinational companies who use lithium-ion batteries in their products to conduct human rights due diligence, investigate whether the cobalt is extracted under hazardous conditions or with child labour, and be more transparent about their suppliers.
Populations in the U.S. and around the world use Chinese-produced lithium-ion batteries, and by extension, increase demand for the cobalt that powers them. Nearly half of U.S. lithium-ion battery imports in 2020 came from China. The transition to renewable energies has fed the growing demand for cobalt and other minerals.
As a critical raw material in lithium-ion battery production, cobalt is in high demand. It is needed to power smartphones, tablets, and laptops as well as electric vehicles, but it is the latter where astronomical growth risks perpetuating misery.
