Fully-sealed, or Valve Regulated Lead Acid (VRLA), batteries still need venting, as they have a pressure-release valve. The battery box for my U3 battery has a few holes in it for venting to the outside, even though it is not completely pressure tight but sealed off from the interior of the caravan.
The closest battery to a sealed battery is the VRLA or valve regulated lead acid or gas recombination types. These batteries have vents but will only vent off if abused. They can often be used on their sides or even upside down as they don't have free electrolyte, like some AGM or Gel batteries.
The important point for our purposes here is that hydrogen and oxygen gasses are both flammable and need to be removed from the battery. Venting is the process by which a lead acid battery releases these gasses in order to prevent them from building up pressure inside your battery.
