Free QuoteExamples of the different storage requirements for grid services include: Ancillary Services – including load following, operational reserve, frequency regulation, and 15 minutes fast response. Relieving congestion and constraints: short-duration (power application, stability) and long-duration (energy application, relieve thermal loading).
Electricity storage is an emerging market and we work to ensure storage developments are integrated efficiently and effectively into the existing distribution network. We expect storage projects to exponentially grow over the long term and become a key part of the UK and Ireland's energy infrastructure.
The main changes effecting project developers involve the way that queue for new grid connections is managed, which will switch from 'first come, first served' to 'ready first, connected first' system, the idea being to remove speculative applications from the queue. The hope is to substantially reduce connection timeframes.
The Clean Power 2030 Action Plan will significantly affect the way the grid connections queue is managed, as well as delivering other changes for project developers.
In simple terms, it can allow the capture of generated energy when it is supplemental to needs, so that it can be stored and released at times when it is needed, for example, at times of peak demand. It provides the ability to instantaneously balance power supply and demand.
We expect storage projects to exponentially grow over the long term and become a key part of the UK and Ireland's energy infrastructure. Ofgem has approved modifications removing the exclusion of storage at transmission voltages (GCode). Storage now falls under Generation within the Distribution Code (DCode).
