By 2023, Maldives plans to have 75 MW of solar capacity installed. At the UN Climate Action Summit in 2019, Maldives' minister of environment announced the target to increase the share of renewables in the country's energy mix to 70 percent by 2030, an ambitious target compared to four percent renewable energy mix in 2019.
The Government of Maldives has committed to reduce the electricity burden on small businesses and increasing the affordability of electricity for all citizens. With insufficient electricity tariff, the utilities have benefitted directly from the usage subsidy and indirectly from the fuel subsidy.
