It helps reduce the internal resistance of lithium-ion batteries and improves their Coulombic efficiency, cycling stability, and rate performance.
For example, Jiang et al. used carbon cloth to make the negative current collector of the battery (see Fig. 9 f) and deposited Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 on the surface of the current collector with the aid of a hydrothermal method and thermal annealing process to prepare the electrode.
The current collector, which serves as an important component of LIBs, significantly influences the electrochemical performance of the battery. Numerous efforts have been spent on the design and fabrication of high-performance negative current collectors in the field of LIBs to achieve excellent battery performances.
Besides, most of the single-component special-surface current collectors are electrochemically inactive and cannot help to obviously improve the battery capacity. Whereas based on the use of active functional layers, the multicomponent special-surface current collectors can contribute a lot to the capacity.
However, unlike other components, the commercial current collectors of copper or aluminum foils for LIBs have been remaining almost unchanged since 1991, which also indicates the significant commercialization potential of improving the battery performance by incorporating high-performance current collectors.
Batteries with this porous current collector exhibit high reversible discharge capacities of 383.9 mAh g −1 at 0.5 mA and 374 mAh g −1 even after 0.2 C and 0.5 C rate cycles, whereas the battery with a complanate current collector delivers only 309.6 and 296.7 mAh g −1. Fig. 6.
