For power and redundancy, there are some options above! To be fully redundant, the power sources need to be independent and isolated from each other. For instance, some people might want to put two 2S batteries together in parallel, which provides more capacity but zero redundancy.
The dual redundant system is analyzed and tested in a SIL to validate that all safety critical failures are monitored, detected, isolated, mitigated, and annunciated to crew/ground controller. The results of the Built-In-Test (BIT) testing in the SIL are used to verify the coverage factor in the PLOC calculation due to in-line monitoring.
The following features are present in the described redundant setup for HV systems (can be modified for LV with a regulator at 2S input): External voltage regulator is not required. The BEC (Battery Eliminator Circuit) is the primary source, set at ~8.1V. A 2S 550mAh Lipo battery is the secondary and pit use source. Off the charger, this battery will settle to ~8.3V.
In the context of power systems, for a switch to be truly redundant, each source cannot be directly traced back to the other source with respect to the (-) receiver. The switch device makes the (-) ground common between the RX and the two sources.
Some redundancy switch devices come with built-in voltage regulation like some ESCs (Electronic Speed Controllers). Others have a programmable BEC (Battery Eliminator Circuit) found in some ESCs. Additionally, some ESCs have opto isolation. For instance, the Jeti DSM passes throttle data from the input to the output untouched, while the PowerBox does not, saving cabling.
