3. Reactive power compensation by fixed capacitor Fixed capacitors are commonly utilized as reactive power compensators. Lately, STATCOMs are largely utilized as in voltage stability of power systems as well as a reactive power supply or source .
The circuit diagram of compensation capacitors and peripheral hardware in the implemented hybrid reactive power compensation system is also given in Fig. 7. As can be seen in this figure, there are six single-phase and two three-phase capacitors. Rated powers of each capacitor are also shown in the same figure.
The controller, after some calculations, decides on the capacitor stages closest to these powers and activates them. However, after the capacitors are switched on/off, unlike conventional capacitor switched compensation systems, the reactive powers drawn from each phase of the grid must be of the same type.
In literature, as mentioned in, reactive power compensation had been discussed for a localized load in a three-phase single stage grid connected system. The method used was a reactive power compensation unit implemented by a Digital Signal Processor (DSP) to supply the reactive power demand of the connected load.
3.3. Static VAR compensator (SVC) SVC is a controller that is connected in parallel with transmission lines. It comprises several controllers, such as the TCR and TSR, used for reactive power absorption, and the TSC, which is used for reactive power injection into the system when needed.
