It is the ratio of energy stored in a capacitor to the energy dissipated as thermal losses due to the equivalent series resistance (ESR) and I2R losses. Higher ESR can cause excessive heating in the capacitor at higher frequencies beyond its max allowable power dissipation.
If the ripple current exceeds the specifications, it might have an impact on the capacitor's behavior. A power loss generates self-heating of the capacitor. Depending on the capacitor technology this can lead to reduction of lifetime or in worst case the capacitor can fail.
Parts with different design, e.g. low inductance ceramic capacitors (LICA), land grid array (LGA) etc., might need additional testing and tailoring of the requirements described in this document. Although the focus of this document is on commercial MLCCs, many procedures discussed below would be beneficial for military-grade capacitors. II.
